The Mouth-Body Connection

Dental Hygiene

Rather than “clean” the mouth and rid it from all bacteria, our dental hygienists seek to bring harmony to the oral microbiome and restore its innate abilities.

Our mouths are home to a diverse ecosystem containing over 800 different species of microorganisms…and counting!  This ecosystem, otherwise known as the oral microbiome, functions symbiotically to support the health and immune response of the rest of the body.

Our hygienists use salivary testing and microscopic analysis to hone in on your needs to provide customized care.

This is not your typical dental cleaning. In alignment with the rest of our practice, your hygiene visit will be specifically tailored to you and your overall health.

visual exam

about

Our mouths can show the first signs of dis-ease in the body and our dental hygienists are biologically trained to recognize oral health manifestations that may correlate to other systems of the body.

PERIODONTAL EVALUATION

about

The links between gum health and systemic health have been widely researched. Periodontal disease has been associated with a number of ill-health conditions ranging from cardiovascular disease and diabetes to cancer and pregnancy outcomes. Measurements are taken to assess both gum and bone health and recommendations will be individualized for your specific situation and needs.

The use of ozone

about

Ozone has powerful antibacterial, antimicrobial, and antifungal properties. In a healthy mouth it can be used for support and prevention, whereas in an unhealthy environment it has potent antimicrobial properties, can reduce inflammation, and bring balance back to the mouth by optimizing the oral flora. Ozone water is administered throughout your dental cleaning and used as a rinse, and ozone oil may be introduced into the gum pockets found in periodontal disease.

Saliva Testing

about

Sillha chairside salivary analysis gives insight into caries risk and/or periodontal disease. It will also assess your acidity and buffering capacity which lend insight into gastrointestinal health.

Microscopic Analysis

about

The goal of microscopic evaluation is to determine the health of the oral biofilm. A healthy biofilm will absolutely have bacteria, but not pathogenic bacteria. Through the identification of pathogenic bacteria, the dental hygienist can personalize your hygiene visit and allow for more accurate diagnostic follow-ups to ensure your oral health is trending in the right direction.

Ultrasonic Technology

about

In addition to hand scaling, an ultrasonic scaler will be used for adequate removal of bacterial biofilm and calcified tartar deposits on your teeth. This device uses vibrational forces and a steady stream of ozonated water for comfort, efficiency, and control.

Biocompatible Material

about

As with all procedures, we assure that we are using only the most biocompatible or “body-friendly” materials during your hygiene visit. Our goal is not to disrupt the oral microbiome, but ensure and create balance. All of our hygiene visits are fluoride free and include safe, alternative options for tooth remineralization.

Bristle

about

Is your mouth putting your body at risk? Our clinic has partnered with bristle, a clinical laboratory that is advancing the field of molecular testing, to bring the bristle test chairside (and to your home!) for our patients. Numerous studies have been published demonstrating the destructive outcomes associated with high levels of specific bacteria in the mouth that affect the whole body as well as oral health. This relationship is now recognized as the oral-systemic connection. The Bristle salivary diagnostic test is simple, cost effective, and highly accurate in identifying the known high risk pathogens in your mouth to allow for accurate diagnosis and risk profiling. Upon receiving your results, you receive custom treatment and product recommendations that truly personalize your oral healthcare.
