TMJ / TMD Treatment in North Liberty, Iowa

Your jaw isn't the problem. It's a signal.

TMJ/TMD treatment that looks at the whole picture — not just where it hurts.

The Reality

Most people with TMJ dysfunction have already tried something.

A night guard. Physical therapy. Maybe a specialist who treated the joint in isolation and sent them home with marginal improvement. Maybe even a jaw pain treatment plan that only focused on where it hurt.

What they haven’t tried is someone asking why.

At Vios, we don't start TMJ treatment with a splint. We start with a conversation — and a thorough look at your bite, your airway, your posture, your history, and how everything connects. Because the jaw is one of the most structurally consequential joints in the body. When it's off, you feel it in places you'd never think to connect to your mouth.

What TMJ dysfunction can look like

Jaw pain is the obvious one. But for many patients, the jaw is the last thing they mention — because they're too focused on the headaches that won't quit, the neck tension, the disrupted sleep, the ear pressure with no clear cause.

TMD is a whole-body conversation. And it rarely travels alone.

Common presentations we work with:

  • Chronic jaw pain, clicking, or locking
  • Teeth grinding or clenching
  • Headaches and migraines
  • Neck, shoulder, or upper back tension
  • Ear pain, fullness, or tinnitus
  • Disrupted sleep or airway concerns
  • Ear fullness and menieres
  • Bite that feels "off" — even subtly
  • Tinnitus

If you've been to multiple providers without answers, that's not a sign it's all in your head. It's a sign no one has looked at the full picture yet.

We don't guess. We measure.

Diagnostics

How we approach it

Vios takes a structural and systemic approach to TMJ/TMD treatment. That means evaluating the relationship between your bite, your airway, and your overall function — not just treating symptoms in isolation.

What sets our diagnostic process apart is that we don't guess.
We measure.

T-Scan: Digital Bite Force Analysis

Most dental offices assess bite with articulating paper — it tells you where you're hitting. It doesn't tell you how hard, in what sequence, or whether the load is balanced.

T-Scan captures real-time force data as you close and chew — showing exactly how pressure is distributed across your teeth, which side is overloaded, and how bite timing affects your joints. It turns a subjective observation into objective data. This type of digital bite analysis helps us understand whether bite imbalance may be contributing to TMJ pain or jaw dysfunction.

Occlusal imbalance is one of the most common — and most overlooked — contributors to jaw and TMJ dysfunction. You can't correct what you haven't accurately measured.

EMG: Muscle Activity Mapping

Your jaw muscles tell a story your joints can't always communicate on their own. Electromyography (EMG), also known as EMG muscle mapping, measures the electrical activity in the muscles responsible for chewing and jaw movement— showing how hard those muscles are working, whether they're firing symmetrically, and whether they're in a state of chronic tension or overload.

In a healthy jaw system, muscles are quiet at rest and activate predictably during function. In TMD, that pattern breaks down.

EMG shows us exactly where and how.

Used together:

T-Scan and EMG give us a complete functional picture, creating a more advanced TMJ diagnostic process: what the bite is doing structurally, and how the surrounding musculature is responding to it.  That combination is rare in dental practice. It's also the difference between treating a symptom and understanding a system.

From there, we layer in airway evaluation, advanced diagnostic imaging, and a thorough patient history — so your care plan is built around your anatomy, your symptoms, and your goals. Not a one-size-fits-all protocol.

Why Patients Travel to Vios

Biological dentistry changes the frame.

When you're looking at the mouth as part of the whole body — not a separate system — you ask different questions. You notice different patterns. You connect dots that don't get connected in a conventional setting.

That's what Vios offers: a practitioner who takes your pain seriously, looks beyond the obvious, and builds a care approach with real structural intention behind it.

Many of our TMJ patients have been dealing with symptoms for years. Some have tried multiple treatments. Some were told their imaging "looked fine." Fine imaging doesn't always mean a functional jaw — and we treat accordingly.

We welcome travel patients and are happy to coordinate care across multiple appointments.
