Tooth Colored Fillings
Tooth-colored fillings help us treat the smallest areas of decay before they progress and require a larger restoration like an inlay or onlay. To place a filling, we do still need to remove the area of decay, but instead of using a traditional drill which can be more invasive than necessary, we can use air abrasion to remove the decay and prepare the tooth for a filling.
Where traditional metal fillings can expand and contract with temperature changes, causing teeth to crack, tooth-colored fillings better mimic your natural tooth structure. They can even be color-matched to blend in seamlessly with your natural teeth in shade and translucency.
Metal amalgam fillings have been the gold standard (see what we did there?) in dentistry for filling cavities for many years, but today, tooth-colored fillings are very popular—but metal amalgam fillings are unsightly and can cause cracks in your tooth.
Tooth-colored fillings require less removal of healthy tooth structure, which is our MO!
If you have mercury fillings you’d like to replace with safe and discreet composite fillings, Dr. Kriegel would be happy to help. He’s one of just a few doctors in Iowa that is SMART certified.
